| True Links Style Golf, with Mountain Vistas – Royalwood is a Beauty to Behold!
Located in the scenic and serene Fraser Valley, Royalwood Golf Course is home to one of the most popular golf destinations in southern British Columbia. In 1987, architect Jim McIntyre laid out and built a fantastic 18 hole, par 72 layout that has become the home of golf for the Lower Mainland. Known for having some of the Province’s best green surfaces, Royalwood is a delight to play and can challenge the scratch player while being a true delight to play for all skill levels and age groups. Bordered by 60 foot tall Lombardi Poplars and unique Japanese Maples, Royalwood’s 18 holes are a delightful walk in a beautiful setting.
Start out by taking in the majestic beauty of the surrounding mountains. The Vedder Canal runs along the entire length of the triangular shaped property and it’s berm is omnipresent in the landscape. The right side of the par 4 first hole runs parallel to the course "Workeryard" and the Trans Canada Highway out of bounds the entire length. 200 yards off the tee a lake guards the left side of the fairway up to within 20 yards of the green. A left to right accurate tee shot is a must. The Veder Canal protects the entire length of the right side of the par 5 second hole. The left side of the fairway may appear safe but is actually a hazard which makes the tee shot and the second shot, wood or iron, extremely difficult if birdie or par is the expectation. On the 3rd hole, 250 yards off the tee, two 40 foot Cottonwood trees mark the corner for the dogleg left of this par 4 hole. Accuracy off the tee is a premium to establish position for a second shot into a narrow elongated two tier green. The greens are rolling and smooth, but beware of the strategically placed bunkers that protect par on every hole.

The signature 6th hole is a 488 yard par 5, with water coming into play on both the second and third shots. Played downwind, the longer hitters can comfortably reach the generous green and have a go at eagle. Into the wind, the hole plays much more difficult, and demands a precise lay up and approach in order to reach the green in regulation.
Royalwood boasts generous fairways, but in order to score well you have to place the ball in specific landing areas to have the best angle from which to attack the pins. The 148 yard, par 3 8th hole plays to a prevailing left to right wind that guards any pin position on the left side of a green that gently slopes away from the tee. Beware of the winds above, as the Vedder Canal’s berm protects the tee. A cleanly struck mid to short iron will give you a good birdie try.
The 9th hole is a 390 yard par 4 that normally plays downwind. A demanding tee shot and a well protected green make this the hardest hole at Royalwood. Keep your ball down the right center and the green will open up for a much easier approach. Come on into the Snack Shack after the 2nd and 10th holes. It offers full amenties from hot coffee in the morning to cold beverages in the afternoon. Enjoy homemade sandwiches as well as our homemade pastries. Among the selections are our mouthwatering blueberry, lemon and poppyseed muffins and assorted cookies. Royalwood’s real test begins on the par 4 12th hole. Measuring 435 yards and normally playing to a slight helping, right to left wind, the 12th tests every part of your game. A par here is well deserved. The 14th is the first of two back to back par 5s, and the start of a birdie stretch, especially for the longer hitters. At 518 yards from the back tees, two well hit shots will leave you close to or on the green with an eagle try. But again, the links-style layout demands that you manage your shots well into a prevailing left to right wind. The 15th is slightly longer at 549, but normally plays much longer than that, as the tee ball must first head into the wind before the hole gently doglegs left. If you have a right to left shot in your arsenal, use it off the 15th tee and the fairway will be much easier to hit.

The closing stretch at Royalwood is truly enjoyable. The 16th is a 410 yard par 4 that plays slightly into the prevailing wind, with a bunker guarding the left side of the green and with a 10 foot grass slope behind the green that leads down to the lake which guards the back of the green. The 17th is a fun and often frustrating short par 4. At only 299 yards, the big hitters are forced to make a decision – go for the green or play strategically and lay up to a comfortable yardage. Because the prevailing winds are normally helping, the decision is normally to go for it, but beware of the water left and the challenging bunkers that protect this gently undulating green.
Finally, the 18th hole is where most matches are won or lost. Measuring only 159 yards, the par 3 hole is one of the favorites at Royalwood. A nicely struck mid iron, and you can confidently roll your birdie putt on the best greens in British Columbia one more time.
